Tunis J. Lyon, 88, of Willis, Texas, and formerly of Itnyre Road, Smithsburg, Md., passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012, in Conroe, Texas.

Born Feb. 26, 1924, in Grand Rapids, Mich., he was the son of the late Louis and Sjoukje (Hofstra) Lyon.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry from Michigan State University in 1950.

He was employed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest and Park Service, and retired in 1983 as the state forester.

He was a retired first lieutenant from the U.S. Air Force, and served in World War II as a P-38 Lightning pilot in the 55th Fighter Group, stationed in England. He was shot down over Germany in 1943 and was a prisoner of war for one year, returning to Valley Forge, Pa., where he met his wife, Alice Sowers, a registered nurse.

Tunis was devoted to his church, and he had a special bond with his children, his four grandsons, and his great-grandchildren.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing and creating beautiful furnishings from the wood of the farm, where he and his family lived for 60 years (He felt the wood spoke to his hands.).

He was a member of Friendship Lodge 84 and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 378, a life member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Hagerstown, Md.; a fellow in the Society of Foresters and a member of St. Peters Beard Lutheran Church of Smithsburg.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alice J. (Sowers) Lyon, whom he married Feb. 16, 1946; daughter, Alice J. (Frank F.)  Koller of Willis, Texas; son, Samuel T. (Sandra) Lyon of Churchville, Va.; sister, Grace (Donald) Terbeek of Michigan; grandchildren, Frank (Marissa) Koller Jr., George (Felicitas) Koller, Luke (Betty) Lyon and Garrett Lyon; great-grandchildren, Erik Koller, Cari Koller and Samantha Lyon; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, John T. Lyon.

Services will be held Sunday, April 22, at 1 p.m. at St. Peters Beard Lutheran Church, with Pastor Richard Hembrock officiating. Burial will be in Grindstone Hill Cemetery, Chambersburg, Pa. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the start of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Tunis to the Alzheimer's Association or to the charity of your choice.
