Sharpsburg Elementary School hosted Ava Gift, Americanism chairwoman of Sharpsburg American Legion Auxiliary United 236, on March 30.
Gift presented monetary awards and ribbons to the winners of the annual Americanism essay contest for fifth-graders.
The theme of this year’s essay was, “How Can I Show My Patriotism in My Community?”
First-place winner Paige Reynolds received $25. Morgan Dyer received $15 for second place and Cassidy Nicholson received $10 for third place. Each participating student received a 2012 $1 gold coin as a token of appreciation from the Sharpsburg American Legion.
In addition, Principal Ryan Hench accepted a $25 donation for the school library and a $50 donation for the school’s emergency fund for children from the Sharpsburg American Legion Auxiliary.
