Fire destroys storage shed near Boonsboro

April 17, 2012

BOONSBORO — A large shed was destroyed by fire Monday evening northeast of Boonsboro, a Washington County emergency dispatcher said.

The call for the fire at 21271 Mt. Lena Road, just off U.S. 40 by the Mason-Dixon Dragway, came in about 6:16 p.m., the dispatcher said.

By the time fire crews arrived, the shed was fully engulfed in flames and fire was spreading to an adjacent smaller shed, said Terry Stouffer, fire chief of Mt. Aetna Volunteer Fire Department.

The large shed, roughly about 50 feet by 75 feet, and the smaller shed were destroyed, Stouffer said. Another smaller shed and a garage on a neighboring property were scorched, he said.

Crews from The First Hose Co. of Boonsboro arrived first on the scene. Engines from Boonsboro and Mt. Aetna were assisted by numerous tankers from other area fire departments, the dispatcher said.

The Washington County fire marshal was called to the scene, but the cause of the fire was not determined as of Monday night, said Keith Abrecht, Boonsboro deputy fire chief. The fire started to the rear of the shed, he said.

Units cleared the scene shortly before 9 p.m., the dispatcher said.

One Boonsboro firefighter received a minor injury from debris in his eyes and was treated on the scene, Abrecht said. No other injuries were reported.
