Vacant Hancock house destroyed by fire

April 17, 2012

HANCOCK — Firefighters from numerous departments across the Tri-State area responded to a house fire east of Hancock Tuesday morning, a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher said.

The vacant house in the 14600 block of Bain Road was a total loss, the dispatcher said.

The call came about 8:51 a.m., and fire crews didn’t leave the scene until 11:56 a.m., the dispatcher said.

Lt. Ben Hoopengardner of the Hancock Volunteer Fire Co. said the house was engulfed in flames by the time crews arrived.

Fire spread to a 20-feet by 20-feet shed and also charred about a half-acre of grass on the property, Hoopengardner said.

The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal was called to investigate the fire, but neither Hoopengardner nor the dispatcher had details about where the fire started or its cause.

Fire companies from Hancock, Clear Spring and Williamsport were joined by Berkeley Springs from West Virginia and Needmore from Pennsylvania, as well as various other support units, the dispatcher said.
