Chief: Ranson storage building fire was arson

April 15, 2012

RANSON, W.Va. — A fire that destroyed a vacant storage building Saturday night was intentionally set, Independent Fire Co. Chief Donald Longerbeam said Sunday.

“It was an arson fire,” Longerbeam said.

There was no power to the 30-by-60-foot wooden building and witnesses said they saw juveniles running from the scene, he said.

The fire in the 200 block of North George Street was reported at 10:16 p.m., Longerbeam said. Though the building is four blocks from the firehouse, it had partially collapsed by the time firefighters arrived, he said.

Firefighters from Citizens Fire Co. in Charles Town, W.Va., and the Friendship and Blue Ridge fire companies from Harpers Ferry. W.Va., assisted at the scene, Longerbeam said. No one was injured and the scene was cleared at about midnight, he said.

The juveniles believed to have caused the fire had not been identified as of Sunday afternoon, Longerbeam said.

Anyone with information about the fire may call the West Virginia Arson Hotline at 1-800-233-FIRE, he said.
