Maryland Fire Chiefs Association gives $7,500 to National Fallen Firefighters Foundation

April 15, 2012

FUNKSTOWN — The Maryland Fire Chiefs Association presented a ceremonial check, and a real check, for $7,500 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation during the association’s Sunday meeting in Funkstown.

The money was the proceeds from a golf event the association held in Anne Arundel County, Md., last November, said Rick Blair, newly elected president of the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association.

The money will be used to help the families of fallen firefighters, said Cathy Hedrick, spokeswoman for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

The foundation pays travel, meal and lodging expenses for families of fallen firefighters to visit during the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, which is in October, Hedrick said. The memorial is in Emmitsburg in northern Frederick County, Md.

Other services the foundation provides to family members of fallen firefighters include grief counseling, life- training classes and a June camp for children of fallen firefighters, Hedrick said.
