LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Hagerstown pitchers Kylin Turnbull and Taylor Hill combined to hold Lakewood to four hits, and the Suns beat the BlueClaws 5-1 on Friday in a South Atlantic League game.
Hagerstown (6-3) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning off Lakewood starter Ethan Stewart. Brett Newsome led off with a double to left and scored one out later on Billy Burns’ triple to left.
Turnbull worked a scoreless first five innings before the BlueClaws got to him in the sixth, tying the score at 1. Gauntlett Eldemire led off with a double to center and scored on a two-out double to left by Maikel Franco off Hill, who had just entered the game. The run was credited against Turnbull.
Hagerstown regained the lead, 2-1, in the seventh when Cole Leonida tagged Lakewood reliever Colby Shreve (0-1) for his first home run.
The Suns extended their lead to 4-1 in the eighth on Matthew Skole’s two-out, two-run double to right, and made it 5-1 in the ninth on Burns’ two-out RBI single.
Turnbull went 5 2/3 innings for the Suns, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out three. Hill (2-0) got the win, working 3 1/3 innings in relief and allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Stewart worked six innings for the BlueClaws (3-6), allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven.
