Mrs. Fern I. (Long) Bateman Martin, 91, formerly of Pen Mar Street, Waynesboro, Pa., died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Hearthstone Retirement Village, Mount Joy, Pa.

Born Sept. 14, 1920, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Allen and Ethel (Butts) Long.

Fern graduated from Hagerstown High School with the class of 1939, and Wilford Academy of Beauty Culture in Philadelphia.

She and the former Edna M. Damuth owned and operated the Fern and Edna Beauty Salon, which was on West Main Street in Waynesboro, from 1944 until retiring in 1982.

She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, the Ladies Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 1758 and the National AARP.

Fern is survived by one son, Gordon McKnight Bateman (husband of Jill Dianne) of Landisville, Pa.; two grandchildren, Jeffrey McKnight Bateman of Orlando, Fla., and Julie Ann MacKneer of Hershey, Pa.; two great-grandsons, Drew and Ryan MacKneer; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gordon McKnight Bateman, who was killed in World War II; her second husband, Walter P. Martin, who died in 1992; a sister, Louise Long Rouch; and brothers, Paul and Albert Long.

Burial in Green Hill Cemetery will be private; however, friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of her life at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Christ United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church St., Waynesboro, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Cook. There will be a luncheon to follow at the church.

Arrangements are being handled by Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, PA 17268.
