HAGERSTOWN — Two weeks ago, the Hagerstown Community College baseball team suffered a 15-8 loss on the road at Frederick Community College.

HCC coach Scott Jennings had the Hawks better prepared for the Cougars on Thursday, when they came out on top of a high-scoring battle 13-11.

Jennings likes how the offense is coming to life for HCC (21-19).

“I am really happy with the way that we have swung the bats in the past couple of games,” Jennings said. “We beat two quality teams in Chesapeake and Frederick. We still need to pitch better. Even though it was a high-scoring game, we did make some quality pitches to get out of some jams. It was just a hitter’s day. Every time some team scored, the other team came right back. That’s the way it was.”

Right fielder Josh Knupp finished with three hits, three RBIs and three runs for the Hawks. Shortstop Eric Schanzenbacher had two hits, two RBIs and two runs, while catcher Lazaro Torres also had two RBIs and two runs. Center fielder Terrell Thompson had two hits and two RBIs, third baseman Dylan Dunn had two hits and two runs, and second baseman Drew DeShong added two RBIs.

Thomas Rose (3-6) got the win in relief for HCC. Dylan Schaeffer earned his first save of the season.

Sophomore designated hitter Joey Miller, a South Hagerstown graduate, socked a three-run homer and finished with two hits for Frederick (24-12). Josh Swirchak had four hits and Brody Tennant added three hits.

“I thought we hit the ball extremely well,” Cougars coach Rodney Bennett said. “Our pitchers gave away 10 free passes. We walked eight batters and hit two batters. That is why they scored 13 runs. ... It was a good day to be a hitter.”

Schanzenbacher had an RBI single and Knupp added a two-run double in the first, while DeShong hit a two-run triple in the fourth for HCC. Knupp had an RBI single and Torres added a two-run single in the fifth.

HCC scored two runs in the sixth for a 13-9 lead. Schanzenbacher hit an RBI double and Cole Sellers and Dunn followed with singles to bring home Schanzenbacher.

The Hawks got a run in the seventh on an RBI single to center by Thompson.

HCC scored its final two runs in the eighth on an RBI triple to center by Chris Kulik and an RBI single to left by Thompson.

Jennings’ HCC teams have won at least 20 games in each of his 12 seasons in charge.
