Howard William Hurd, 85, of Hagerstown, Md., died on Thursday, April 12, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born Oct. 28, 1926, in Washington County, Md., he was the son of the late Chester Franklin and Ruth Corderman Hurd.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Elizabeth Hurd, in 1996.

He served in the U. S. Army with the military police.

He was employed by Statton Furniture, Hagerstown, retiring after 45 years of employment.

He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

He is survived by his second wife, Darlene Hurd; one daughter, Debra Harris and husband, Roger; one sister, Viola Edwards; a half-sister, Harriett Gilbert; a half-brother, Ray Hurd; two grandchildren, Kevin L. Harris and Kelly A. Harris; three great-grandchildren, Alexis R. Harris, Trey P. Harris and Bryce L. Harris; three stepchildren, Patricia Eppard and husband, Mark, Robin J. Kellick and husband, Greg, and Robert J. Smith Jr. and wife, Cindy; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Leah.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Jack W. Gordon; and two sisters, Margaret Moats and Blanche Culler.

Funeral services will be held at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, on Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Mike Seger will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
