Karl W. Rohrer Jr., 86

Karl W. Rohrer Jr., of Martinsburg, W.Va., passed away Oct. 23, 2011, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was the son of the late Karl W. Rohrer Sr. and Jeanette Berger Rohrer of Hagerstown.

Karl was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, class of 1943. He was of Protestant faith.

Karl entered military service in February 1943. He flew a combat tour with the 8th U.S. Army Air Forces in Europe. He was a member of the Century Bomber, 100th Bomb Group. He flew as a ball turret gunner on B-17s. In later years of service, he served on the Minuteman missile program as a security noncommissioned officer in Minot, N.D. He retired from the Air Force in January 1972.

Karl was predeceased by his son, Karl W. Rohrer III.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nelda Brewer Rohrer; a daughter, Wanda Norton; sisters, Ruth Davis and Jeanette Statton, both of Hagerstown; one brother, George Rohrer of Yelm, Wash.; and cousins, nephews and nieces.

At his request, he was cremated. Military honors will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Arlington National Cemetery. A private funeral service will be announced at a later date.
