Nationals' Morse, Ankiel to rehab with Suns

April 08, 2012

HAGERSTOWN — The Hagerstown Suns, Single-A affiliates of the Washington Nationals, will receive Washington Nationals outfielders Michael Morse and Rick Ankiel on Monday as part of the two players’ rehabilitation assignments.

Ankiel and Morse will be added to the Suns’ roster and available to play beginning with Monday night’s game against the Lexington Legends at Municipal Stadium at 7:05 p.m.

Ankiel began the season on the disabled list with soreness in his quad and has yet to play with the Nationals this season. Ankiel has played in four games with the Double-A Harrisburg Senators, batting .333 (3-for-9) with two home runs and three RBIs.

Morse, who has been sidelined with a right lat (back) strain, also began the season on the disabled list and has been on a rehab assignment with Harrisburg. In three games with the Senators, Morse is batting .375 (3-for-8) with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs.

Morse is in his eighth Major League season, fourth with the Nationals, and enjoyed his best year in 2011 when he batted .303 with 31 home runs and 91 RBIs playing both first base and left field for Washington. Morse recently signed a two-year contract with the Nationals worth $10.5 million that expires following the 2013 season.

Ankiel began his career as a pitcher before switching to the outfield fulltime in 2008 with the Cardinals when he hit 25 home runs with 71 RBIs. He joined the Nationals in 2011 and batted .239 with nine home runs and 37 RBIs in 122 games. Ankiel is signed under a one-year contract worth $1.25 million through the 2012 season.

The Suns begin a three-game series with the Lexington Legends (Astros) at Municipal Stadium on Monday night at 7:05 p.m.  Right-hander Chris McKenzie (0-0), a returning pitcher from the 2011 Suns team, will start for Hagerstown. He’ll face Lexington’s LHP Kyle Hallock (0-0).
