Three Hagerstown Community College students were recently awarded academic scholarships for the spring semester.

Damian Murphy, of Greencastle, Pa., received the Larry E. Small Memorial Law Enforcement Scholarship.

Recipients of the scholarship must demonstrate outstanding leadership, be active members of the 5-14 Club, be involved in extracurricular activities and have an above-average academic record at HCC.

Murphy is an administration of justice major and plans to transfer to a four-year school to complete his bachelor’s degree before becoming a sheriff’s deputy. He ultimately hopes to work for a federal agency. Murphy will graduate from HCC in 2013.

Fellow administration of justice majors Alison Griffith of Boonsboro and Cody Swope of Hagerstown each received the Maryland Law Enforcement Officers Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded by faculty representatives from HCC’s administration of justice department to eligible students working toward an associate of applied science degree in the administration of justice field.

After graduating in fall 2012, Griffith plans to transfer to University of Maryland University College to complete her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice before becoming an ATF agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Swope also plans to transfer to UMUC to complete his bachelor’s degree in homeland security.
