Potomac State rallies past HCC

COLLEGE BASEBALL

KEYSER, W.Va. — Hagerstown Community College couldn’t hold a six-run lead as Potomac State exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on the way to a 13-8 win over the Hawks on Friday afternoon.

The Hawks (18-18) led 6-1 through 5 1/2 innings before the Catamounts rallied to take a 9-6 edge at the end of six.

HCC bounced back with two runs in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to one run, but Potomac State tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to salt away the win.

Josh Knupp had two hits and two RBIs for the Hawks. Jacob Keeney and Dylan Dunn each had two hits and an RBI, while Lazaro Torres and Chris Kulik each added two hits.

Shepherd 17-8, West Liberty 7-3

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — Shepherd senior Nathan Minnich went 7-for-7 on the day with two home runs, six RBIs and six runs scored as the visiting Rams (21-11, 13-4) swept West Liberty (6-18, 4-11) in a WVIAC doubleheader.

Minnich, Waynesboro graduate, became Shepherd’s all-time leader in career RBIs with 185.



COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Shepherd 2-4, Concord 0-1

ATHENS, W.Va. — Shepherd swept Concord in a WVIAC doubleheader.

Tricia Bettura pitched a two-hit shutout for the Rams (24-15, 11-3) in the first game, while Bianca Biondillo had two hits and Jess Mason had two RBIs.

For Shepherd in the second game, Savannah Snyder had two hits, including a double, Sam McQuade had two hits and an RBI and Chelsie Oals had two RBIs.



PREP BASEBALL

Jefferson 9, Pendleton 0

FRANKLIN, W.Va. — Sean Spots pitched a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts and had three of Jefferson’s 11 hits to lead the Cougars past Pendleton County.

Andrew King and Will Oliver each had two hits and Dennis Jackson had two RBIs for Jefferson (9-3).

BOWLING

Southside results

Terry Moore, of Hagerstown, won the recent Marvin Shupp Memorial King of the Hill Handicap Duckpin Tournament at Southside Bowl.

After a field of 55 bowlers competed in six qualifying games, five advanced to compete for top honors in a stepladder format. Moore, the fifth seed, defeated fourth-seeded Milton Miller in an extra-frame roll-off and then beat third-seeded Robin Keller 143-134, second-seeded Robert Keefer 145-128 and top-seeded Ed Lowman 152-151 for the title.

Other recent highlights:

n In the Youth/Adult Mixed League, Phil Fox won $50 for bowling a 798 series, which was 150 pins over his 213 average.

n In the Daryl Moats Commercial Men’s League, Chuck Timbrook won $100 and a plaque for bowling a 300 game.

n In the Friday Night Mixed League, Scott Buzzard won another plaque for bowling his second 300 game of the bowling season.
