Robert W. West Sr., age 70, of Chambersburg, Pa., passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at his home.
Born Aug. 8, 1941, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late John and Dorothy Schnable West.
Bob was a 1959 graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, serving from 1964 to 1967. He served aboard the USS Dahlgren and did tours in Spain, the Philippines and Vietnam. He had been employed at T.B. Woods Inc., Chambersburg Engineering Co. and Mack Trucks. In addition, he was the owner and operator of Third Base Tavern in Williamsport, Md., from which he recently retired after 24 years. Bob was an avid model railroad enthusiast. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and most of all, traveling.
Surviving is his wife, Margaret "Peggy" West; a son, Robert West Jr. of Clemmons, N.C.; three grandchildren, Amanda West of Chambersburg, Tyler West of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Chelsey West of Huntersville, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Gabriella Allen of Chambersburg and Madden Andrews of Huntersville; and one sister, Donna R. West of San Jose, Calif.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Melinda J. Bean.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, on Tuesday, April 10, at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. The service will conclude at the funeral home with military honors provided by members of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
