Two people injured in head-on crash near Hancock

HANCOCK — One person was flown by helicopter and another taken by ambulance to Meritus Medical Center after a head-on crash between two vehicles Thursday morning near Hancock, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

The injured were identified as Robert Edmund Munday, 47, of 14044 White Oak Ridge in Hancock, and Elwood Harrison Liggett, 56, of Hereford Lane in Warfordsburg, Pa., according to a sheriff’s office news release.

Their conditions were unavailable Thursday afternoon because Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown no longer releases the conditions of patients to the media.

Sheriff’s office deputies and Maryland State Police responded to the accident shortly before 7 a.m. in the 13200 block of Round Top Road, south of Casper Road, the release said.

Liggett was traveling north on Round Top Road, when the vehicle he was driving crested a hill, went over the centerline and collided head-on with a vehicle being driven by Munday, deputies said.

The collision caused Munday’s vehicle to “proceed over” Liggett’s vehicle, the release said. The driver’s side front wheel of Liggett’s vehicle was snapped off.

Liggett was cited for failure to drive right of center, deputies said.

Due to the severity of the injuries, a sheriff’s office accident reconstruction expert responded to the scene.

The sheriff’s office did not specify which motorist was flown to the hospital by a state police helicopter.

The Hancock Volunteer Fire Co. was also at the scene, a Washington County Emergency Services supervisor said.
