HAGERSTOWN — South Hagerstown’s baseball team used a seven-run fourth inning to rally back against Smithsburg and capture a 12-7 victory in MVAL Antietam action Wednesday.

Smithsburg (0-7, 0-5) led 5-1 before the Rebels (3-4, 2-5) put together their game-changing inning, in which the first six batters reached base and eventually crossed the plate.

“It was a momentum thing,” South coach Zach Swisher said. “In baseball — especially high school baseball — it’s easy to feed off the other guys.”

Ryan Barton got things started for the Rebels in the fourth with a single. Colby Johnson singled, Bobby Miller singled to score Barton, Jordan Dickens walked to load the bases, Tim Kitchen blasted a two-run double to left and Airin Martin walked.

Keith Johnson later hit an RBI double and Brandon Hess added an RBI single in the inning for South. An error and a passed ball scored the other two runs.

“It’s been this way for us: We can’t stop the bleeding in one inning,” Smithsburg coach Trey Cobb said. “We need someone who can control that.”

Kitchen finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead South.

Smithsburg appeared to be on track to claim its first win of the season. Josh Miller scored on a fielding error in the first inning to put the Leopards up 1-0.

The Leopards put up four runs in the third inning to go up 5-0. Dylan Durning hit a two-run double, Miller scored on an error and Zack Krall crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Rebels put up their first run in the bottom half on Keith Johnson’s RBI single.

South led 8-5 after its monster fourth inning and never relinquished the lead.

“We came out flat, but we fought through and got hot in the fourth,” Swisher said. “Emotions ride in waves and we were able to catch the right wave in the fourth.”

The Rebels added three runs in fifth and another in the sixth to keep a comfortable advantage.

Smithsburg was led by Durning, who finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
