Myers stymies Panthers with 20 Ks

PREP BASEBALL

HANCOCK — Bishop Walsh’s Kevin Myers stymied Hancock on Wednesday, striking out 20 while leading the Spartans to a 3-0 victory.

Myers also drove in two runs with a triple for Bishop Walsh (4-2) and scored the third run on a throwing error.

Hunter McKinley struck out seven for Hancock (3-2).

The Heights 14, Goretti 2

The Heights scored five runs in the first inning and six in the second to put St. Maria Goretti on the back foot quickly.

Casey Bartholomew had three hits and Adam Blenckstone tripled and drove in both runs for the Gaels (7-5).

Mercersburg 10-14, Lawrenceville 9-10

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Mercersburg Academy overcame a 10-0 deficit after two innings in the nightcap, roaring back to shock Lawrenceville and finish off a Mid-Atlantic Prep League doubleheader sweep after the Blue Storm won the opener in eight innings.

In the opener, John Olszewski singled to lead off the bottom of the eighth. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, and Matt MacMahon ended it with an RBI single.

MacMahon hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning, Pat Lien had four hits and George Molner hit a double and drove in two runs for Mercersburg (9-2).

In the nightcap, Mercersburg scored all 14 runs in the final four innings and held Lawrenceville scoreless over the final five. Jeremy Greenberger pitched three of those innings and added two hits.

Molner had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three for the Blue Storm. Trustin Riley and Kenny Guerrero each added two hits.

PREP SOFTBALL

Smithsburg 21, South Hagerstown 0

Sam Gladhill hit two home runs and finished with three hits and six RBIs, and Cara Ferguson pitched a five-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts as Smithsburg remained undefeated, beating South Hagerstown (0-7, 0-5) in the MVAL Antietam.

Ferguson also had four hits and two RBIs for the Leopards (7-0, 5-0). Kinsey Shifflett had four hits and three RBIs, Karah Knight had four hits and Brooke Parks and Kayla Huntzberry each added three hits.

Mercersburg 11-10, Lawrenceville 1-14

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Mercersburg Academy blew out Lawrenceville in the opener of a Mid-Atlantic Prep League doubleheader, but dropped the second game.

Sydney Reath paced the Blue Storm (4-4) in the opener on the mound and at the plate. She gave up one run on three hits and struck out six in the five-inning contest, and went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Abby Hopple went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Reath got roughed up on the mound in the nightcap, giving up 12 hits, but was only charged with five earned runs as Mercersburg’s defense committed eight errors.

Reath went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Shelby Smith finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Drew Brooks had four goals and two assists to lead the Hubs past the Warriors for their first victory this season.

Kyle Hewlett had a goal and an assist, and Brandon Brown and Alex Unger also scored for North (1-4). Reed Jimenez had an assist and Brian Davis made seven saves.

Goretti 7, Shenandoah 1

STRASBURG, Va. — Patrick McDermot had three goals and an assist, and Mike Ewing scored two goals and added two assists for St. Maria Goretti in a win over Shenandoah.

Clarence Wroblewski and Morgan Kenworthy scored and Mike Fairley made nine saves for the Gaels (3-5).

Saint James 14, Mercersburg 10

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Madison Fahey had four goals and three assists, and Margaret Bacon added three goals and four assists to lead the unbeaten Saints.

Lena Tilsworth had three goals and two assists, Kerri Kline had two goals and an assist, and Grace Fulton added two goals for Saint James (5-0). Kate Sweeney stopped 10 shots.

Jordan Shihadeh had three goals to lead Mercersburg Academy (2-4). Gabby Cuzzola and Hanna Warfield each had two goals and an assist. Meredith Wallace had a goal and an assist, Ellie Clark and Maddy Shearer each had a goal, Megan Lafferty made five saves and Syd Godbey added three saves.
