Benny's Pub owner discusses microbrewery with official

April 04, 2012

The owner of Benny’s Pub on Eastern Boulevard in Hagerstown met with a state liquor official on Wednesday to discuss opening a microbrewery.

William Skomski, owner of Benny’s Pub at 49 Eastern Blvd., said he didn’t have time on Wednesday to talk about the project.

But during a hearing last week before the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County Skomski said he wanted to open the microbrewery in a space next to Benny’s by 2014.

Although Skomski’s meeting Wednesday was closed to the public, Lou Berman, an auditor/investigator with the Maryland Comptroller’s Office, said beforehand that prospective microbrewery owners must obtain a license from county liquor officials, and brewery permits from the state and federal governments.

“To make beer there, it allows them to sell that beer to the consumer,” Berman said. “It also allows them to keg the beer and sell it to a wholesaler so it can be distributed.”

Robert Everhart, chairman of the liquor board, said county liquor officials requested that Berman meet with Skomski because he expressed interest in opening a microbrewery.
