Prep Baseball: Indians grounded by Ship

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Coming off their win Monday over Chambersburg, the young Waynesboro Indians looked to keep the momentum and knock off one of the Mid-Penn Conference kingpins on Tuesday.

But Shippensburg would not be a part of any Indian uprising and downed Waynesboro 8-3, gaining sole possession of first place in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division as Northern lost to Greencastle.

“I don’t know if we had any letdown,” said Waynesboro coach Greg Chandler. “We’re just young, playing a tough schedule and learning to play the game.”

Dylan Bryan started for Waynesboro and allowed four runs in the first two innings before he made a concession to the coaches.

“He told us he was in a car accident Friday and that his hip was hurting,” said Chandler. “We thought (Bryan) could neutralize their bats with his curveball, but they are such a hard-hitting team. So we went to Plan B and then to Plan C.”

Waynesboro (2-2, 1-2) got two runs back in the bottom of the second. Ben Weber walked, John Barr singled, Tim Ingram walked to load the bases and Bryan followed with a walk that forced in Weber. A second run scored when Shippensburg pitcher Marshal Witmer delivered a wild pitch.

Shippensburg (5-0, 3-0) put the game further out of reach with a three-run fourth off Barr, getting three solid hits, a walk, a bloop hit and a Waynesboro error.

Waynesboro tallied a single run in the fifth when Justin Freeman and Cole Warrenfeltz singled with Freeman scoring from third on another wild pitch by Witmer. Freeman had two of Waynesboro’s six hits.

Waynesboro had six hits and six walks and left six runners in scoring position.

“We had our opportunities,” said Chandler.

Center fielder Ethan Klink, the only senior starter for Waynesboro, made several fine defensive plays.

“We are young and showing improvement in each game,” said Chandler. “We’re showing it as a team.”

Witmer not only was the winning pitcher but was on base in each of his five plate appearances. He had a triple, two singles, a walk and he was hit by pitch.
