Owner of Benny's Pub wants to open microbrewery

March 28, 2012

The owner of a Hagerstown restaurant and bar told Washington County liquor officials  Wednesday that he wants to open a microbrewery.

William Skomski, owner of Benny’s Pub at 49 Eastern Blvd., said during a hearing before the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County that he is hoping to open the microbrewery next to Benny’s by 2014.

“This town really needs something like that,” Skomski said. “Think of all the revenue leaving this town to go to (microbreweries in) Frederick. We need to keep that revenue here.”

Robert Everhart, liquor board chairman, said he would arrange to have a meeting with state liquor officials to discuss the endeavor.

Everhart said proposed microbreweries in Maryland must get approval from county, state and federal officials.
