Mad Hatters' Ball to aid county historical society

The second annual Mad Hatters’ Ball Celebration and Fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, at Fountain Head Country Club.

This year’s theme is a “Taste of the Titanic,” featuring dishes from the famous ship’s menu.

The RMS Titanic offered fantastic meals and hosted opulent parties. When it set sail, it was said to be the largest and most luxurious ship ever built.

The ill-fated ship sunk after striking an iceberg on April 14, 1912 — 100 years ago.

The Washington County Historical Society is hosting the ball, and amid ice sculptures and fanciful headwear, attendees can mingle, dance and sample meals offered from the ship’s menu.

“Oysters a la Russe,” “Poached Salmon,” salad dressed with “Champagne Saffron Vinaigrette” and “Roast Sirloin of Beef Forestiere” will be offered.

Period hats, fun hats and naval headgear are encouraged, but not required.

Tom Riford, president and Chiel Executive Officer of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, will serve as master of ceremonies. The band Spectrum will provide the music.

Tickets cost $100, which include an early open bar hour and photos by Mary Pat Kelley of Photography by Dale.

A silent auction of theme-related items and a raffle of a restored antique travel trunk (choice of two from the period of 1850 to 1910) will also be part of the event.

The ball is the primary fundraiser to support the historical society’s operations.
