Dot Foods Inc. hosting job fair in Williamsport

General Manager Brian Duffield said the company is seeking candidates to fill about 55 positions

Dot Foods, Inc. — the leading food redistributor in the nation — is hosting a job fair Saturday at its Williamsport, Md., warehouse to help fill more than 50 full- and part-time positions, a company official said.

Williamsport General Manager Brian Duffield said the company is seeking candidates to fill about 30 full-time material-handler jobs and 25 positions that require a Class A commercial driver’s license.

“We also have very flexible part-time positions available in our warehouse,” Duffield said, noting that the part-time jobs would be perfect for area students or people looking for weekend or nighttime work.

The job fair will take place at the distribution center at 16301 Elliott Parkway from 9 a.m. to noon.

“We’re booming and continuing to grow,” Duffield said. “We need to add more good teammates.”

Dot Foods has grown by about 8 percent, and the Williamsport plant alone by about 10 percent since the end of 2011, marking an upswing from lower figures in 2008 when the industry felt the effects of the slowing economy.

After 10 straight years of double-digit growth from 1997 to 2007, that figure dropped into the 3 percent or 4 percent range in 2008, Duffield said.

“Being at 8 percent while we’re still in kind of the same economic position is a real good sign,” he said.

Signs are also good for manufacturing and warehousing companies across Washington County as a whole, according to county spokeswoman Sarah Lankford Sprecher, speaking on behalf of Timothy R. Troxell, executive director of the Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission.

Hagerstown companies like Volvo Powertrain, Performance Pipe, Cinetic Landis Corp. and Parker Plastics have shown growth since 2011, as well as a newer manufacturing business in Hancock, Md., Evolved Composites, which also may be looking to hire in the near future, Sprecher said.

Based on county numbers, the transportation industry is also showing growth, with companies like FedEx and Freightliner, Sprecher said.

In January, there were 840 more people employed in the county compared to December 2011, marking the strongest labor force since the summer of 2008 and highest level in the past 37 months, Sprecher said.

“It is looking better,” she said.

Founded in 1961 in Mt. Sterling, Ill., Dot Foods has never laid off employees in its entire company history.
