Mail Call - March 28

March 28, 2012

“I would like to thank Jaime Dick, Mayor Bob Bruchey, the Hagerstown police, and all the people supporting the runners on the sidewalk during the Run For Your Luck 5K Saturday. You people are first-rate.”

— Greencastle, Pa.

“To the person saying that if a woman is old enough to have sex she should pay for her protection: We’re not asking the government to pay for contraceptives. We’re asking health care plans to cover them. After all, if a man is mature enough to have sex, he should pay for his own Viagra pills, instead of expecting the insurance company to do that. What goes for the woman should go for the man.”

— Hagerstown

“This is in response to the people who want to extend or rebuild the municipal stadium in Hager Park, and I say no, no, a million times no. Don’t mess with Hager Park. We’re losing too much of our green space in Hagerstown already to development.”

— Hagerstown

“I can’t get letters on time, I can’t get my bills on time, but I sure as heck can go to the mailbox and get the box filled with spam and trash mail from the candidates who are campaigning for office. There’s two to three pieces every day. So they get their mail out on time. What are they doing that we as we’re normal citizens are not? This needs to change immediately. Stop the spam, candidates.”

— Halfway

“Nice article in the paper on the post office closures. Wake up, America. They cannot bail out the post office. Eighty percent of all money coming into the post office goes for employees, current and retirees. We can’t sustain that. Cuts have got to come. It’s gonna hurt, but that’s ... even Donahoe, the postmaster general, said stamps could go up to 75 cents.”

— Leitersburg

“If you want women to pay for their own birth control pills, then make them available over the counter, like condoms are available for men.”

— Williamsport

“I see where over in Maryland, they want a bicycle trail. Well, let me put it this way. Come to Jefferson and Berkeley counties in West Virginia and see the bicycle trail from Charles Town to Martinsburg. I have yet to see bicyclists on that trail. It’s a waste of taxpayers’ money.”

— Charles Town, W.Va.

“I read the Hagerstown Police Department incidents today in the paper. Thirteen domestic violences in eight days, in roughly 11 square miles? What is going on?”

— Hagerstown

“I think the proposal of putting the stadium downtown is a smokescreen, so that when they go ahead and put a bundle of taxpayers’ money at the present stadium, people will say ‘Whew, we convinced them downtown was a crazy idea.’”

— Washington County
