Lester Leo "Gus" Moreland, formerly of Cumberland, Md., passed away Monday, March 26, 2012 at Somerford Assisted Living in Hagerstown, Md.

Gus was born April 27, 1919, the son of the late Frank B. Moreland and Regina Griffin Moreland. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters, and also his wife, Mary Elizabeth Filler Moreland.

Gus entered the U.S. Army in July of 1941, and was honorably discharged in November of 1945. He served in France, Italy, and Germany.

He moved to Hagerstown from Cumberland, and started with C & P Telephone Co. in 1945, retiring in 1983 with 38 years of service. His fellow workers at the telephone company were his second family, and he loved the association he had with them. 

He wanted all of the staff who served him at Somerford to know how very much he appreciated their wonderful service to him.

He helped save many lives by donating 28 1/2 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. He was instrumental in organizing blood drives at C & P Telephone Co.

He was a member of BPO Elks 378, the Eagles in Waynesboro, and the Telephone Pioneers.

Surviving are his loving companion of more than 20 years, Helen Gibney; her two sons and two daughters; niece, Vicki Martin and husband, Lamar, of Cumberland; niece, Cheryl Frame and husband Tom, of Williamsport, Md.; and his very best friend and caregiver, Bob Foltz, and his wife, Masako, of Hagerstown.

Per his request, Gus will be cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Friday, March 30, 2012, at 9:30 a.m. The Rev. George A. Limmer will officiate. Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery in Cumberland at the convenience of the family.
