March is known for March Madness, a time for college basketball. Colleges play for titles and brackets are filled out by fans.

March Madness has meant a little more to some Funkstown residents this season.

Cerys Evans, daughter of Charlie Evans and granddaughter of Elsie Evans, was selected to be one of the ball girls for the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament at Comcast Center in College Park, Md.

Cerys participated in the opening round games on March 17, pitting host Maryland against Navy and Louisville against Michigan State.

The games were nationally televised on ESPN2, and during timeouts Cerys got a little airtime. What a great opportunity.

Barbecue planned at Funkstown fire hall

Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. will hold a barbecue Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Follow the aroma to the fire hall for some open pit beef sandwiches, Italian sausage sandwiches, barbecue chicken and ham sandwiches. Visit early before they sell out.
