New urgent care medical center to open in Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN — MedExpress, a company that operates urgent care centers in several states, will open a new facility April 5 on the east end of Hagerstown.

MedExpress Area Manager Dan Gray said the new urgent care facility will open at 1741 Dual Highway, the former site of Manny’s Oriental Rugs & Gallery. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be April 4.

Gray said the company has 78 facilities, including one in Chambersburg, Pa., and one in Martinsburg, W.Va.

“It seemed like a natural progression” to come to Hagerstown, Gray said.

Personnel at MedExpress facilities treat a variety of injuries and illnesses, including colds, cuts, sprains and minor fractures. They also offer immunizations, EKGs and $20 sports physicals.

“We will treat anything,” he said. “But if we determine a condition is too severe to be treated in our facility, we’ll make arrangements to move the patient to the emergency room.”

According to a 2009 health care industry study by Merritt Hawkins, the average wait time in an emergency room is 212 minutes, and it takes about 20 days to get an appointment with a primary care physician.

“Our goal is to get you in and out in one hour,” said Gray, adding MedExpress staffs its facilities with an adequate number of health care providers, including at least one physician.

He said a trip to MedExpress costs about one-third as much as a visit to an emergency room.

The clinic will employ 20 people to start, Gray said, but that number might increase if there’s a need.

There are three urgent care facilities in Hagerstown operated by Meritus Health. They are Downtown Urgent Care at 324 E. Antietam St., Urgent Care-Sylvania at 13424 Pennsylvania Ave., and Urgent Care-Robinwood at 11110 Medical Campus Road.

A fourth urgent care facility, U.N.I Urgent Care Center, is in the Varsity Medical Center at 11236 Robinwood Drive, Suite 101.
