Hubs break out in fifth inning

PREP BASEBALL

Andrew Yacyk keyed a six-run fifth inning with a three-run homer to lead North Hagerstown to a 10-2 win over Linganore on Friday.

Yacyk had three hits and scored three runs, while Phil Pietro had three hits, including a double and triple, and drove in two runs. Zane Schreiber added two RBIs for the Hubs (2-0).

Aaron Jones struck out six and picked up the win in relief for North.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Ryan Ruiz had three hits and an RBI for Boonsboro in a loss to James Buchanan.

Justin Lewis had a double, a triple and two RBIs for the Warriors (1-1).

Boonsboro led 7-0 in the top of the fifth before giving up four runs each in the fifth and seventh in the loss.

MANCHESTER, Md. — Kinsey Shifflett had three hits, including two doubles, and five RBIs to lead Smithsburg in a five-inning rout of Manchester Valley.

Samantha Gladhill had three hits and three RBIs, Shayla Murray had three hits and Kayla Huntzberry had two hits and two RBIs for the Leopards (2-0).

HANCOCK — Kara McKinley had a two-run homer in the second to lead Hancock to a season-opening win over St. Maria Goretti that was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Tatum True had three hits and four RBIs, Jessica Martin had three hits and two RBIs, Haley Demory had two hits and two RBIs and Emily Harvey had six strikeouts for the Panthers (1-0).

Drew Holderby had a triple for the Gaels (0-4).

St. John’s 25, Saint James 1

FREDERICK, Md. — St. John’s Catholic Prep made the most of numerous walks and eight Saint James errors to score a victory in a game shortened to 4 1/2 innings.

The Vikings (3-0) scored 11 runs in the first inning and seven in the second to take an 18-0 lead before the Saints (0-1) scored in the third.

Ashley Leslie had one of her two hits and scored Saint James’ only run in the third.

St. John’s had only five hits in the game.

Chestnut Ridge 4, Southern Fulton 3

NEW PARIS, Pa. — Chestnut Ridge moved runners and strung together four hits for a three-run fourth inning for a victory over Southern Fulton in the season opener for both teams.

Kelsey White had a two-run double in the Indians’ three-run third inning, leading to a brief 3-1 lead. Allison Spade drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly.

Southern Fulton pitcher Marley Elbin struck out seven and walked four in the complete-game loss. She led the Indians with three hits, while Callie Horton added two.
