Mail Call - March 22

March 22, 2012

“Is the only way Bill Maher feels he can make himself look good is to make fun of Gov. Sarah Palin and her child with Down syndrome? Why does this woman who is bothering no one seem to be all Democrats can talk about? Where is the wonderful women’s movement? Better yet, where is an apology from President Obama? After all, Susan Fluke got one from Obama when Limbaugh called Fluke a nasty name. I forgot, Fluke was trying to push Obamacare’s freebies on taxpayers.”

— Hagerstown

“The most successful location for the Suns stadium would surely be along I-81 or even I-70. Downtown would be good for downtown business and for sure, the bars, but not for Suns attendance. I wouldn’t go there. Cost-wise, and what makes the most sense, is to put a lot of money in the existing stadium. It is at a good location and is still a nice stadium. This would cost less than a new stadium, and would add up to one less piece of empty ground in Hagerstown.”

— Waynesboro, Pa.

“This is on the smoking ban in cars in the state of Maryland. This is to the governor of the state of Maryland. You people don’t have the right to tell me I can’t smoke in my car with my kids because you think it’s a health problem. It’s the health department and insurance companies who are putting pressure on you people. Why don’t you people mind ... the government needs to get out of ordinary people’s lives. Don’t tell me what I have to do, when I pay taxes. You don’t pay nothing for my car. It’s just like the seat-belt law.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m wondering why they don’t do this anymore. They need to put these people in the paper, whether it’s male or female, that owe child support ... that these children’s parents that need to provide for these children aren’t getting their child support, especially in the bad economy. So let’s go back to putting their pictures in the paper that are wanted for back child support, and get these parents their money that they need.”

— Hagerstown

“I too am appalled by the demolition of our beautiful Washington County Hospital. What a waste. I am also shocked by the suggestion to build a stadium in the Baltimore Street and Summit Avenue areas. That would be the final blow to downtown Hagerstown, and the city would never recover from it.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m calling about everybody concerning dressing in church. I think the minister should be dressed properly, and once we get them in the door, and we teach them of the Lord’s love, they will dress to be fit for the King. Their heart needs to be dressed more important than them. And the minister is to teach them. And we need to be saving people.”

— Boonsboro

“Nice article on the Suns coming to Hagerstown. By looking at that pictorial view that The Herald-Mail put in the paper today, the only ones who really benefit from it at about three or four property owners down there. This is going to be off the tax rolls. How much would that cost us there, or are they paying taxes now? And also, what’s the proposed cost of building and buying those properties?”

— Leitersburg

“I see that after 50 years of proud service to the U.S., the aircraft carrier Enterprise is going to California this December to be decommissioned. I also see that President Obama has been invited to attend the ceremony. Great idea. Maybe he can be decommissioned, too, after four years of bad service.”

— Spring Mills, W.Va.

“To the 74-year-old man who wanted to know the man’s name that had the garden behind Bester school: His name was Ernie Munson.”

— Hagerstown

“For the minority of people in Boonsboro who are pushing recycling on the majority of townspeople: May I suggest that if you succeed, the added cost be tallied on your water and sewer bill, and not on the majority of people, who oppose it.”

— Boonsboro

“What a great picture on the front page, March 8, of Boonsboro students taking the pledge to stop using the ‘R’ word. As a mother of a mentally challenged person, son, it hurts me so much. There were problems at birth, my son lost oxygen to the brain, left him so slow. It’s not his fault. I pray more people, adults and children alike, will follow their wonderful steps, and think before they call a person a hateful, hurtful name. Remember, only for the grace of God go I.”

Williamsport

“This is a continuation of the caller who, in Monday’s newspaper, ... said that Democrats always have to fix up messes that the Republicans make. Excuse me, over $800 billion stimulus that didn’t work, Obamacare that nobody wants, gas prices at almost $4, unemployment that’s well over 8 percent that’s probably higher than that ... Democrats in Annapolis. Now that’s a mess.”

— Hagerstown

“On the mail service: Don’t blame our local carriers. They are doing the best job that they can. But in my mail yesterday came a coupon booklet that was to go from January. ... I got it yesterday. January and February are already over, and the coupons are expired. Now that is excellent mail service out of Baltimore or wherever.”

— Clear Spring

“The practice of forgiveness is not only our most important contribution to the healing of the world, but to our own bodies.”

— Hagerstown
