Lewis Martin Coss, 82, of Chambersburg, Pa., and formerly of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Menno Haven in Chambersburg.

Born Sunday, Feb. 16, 1930, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Edward L. Coss and Bertha H. Coss.

He helped to establish and pastor the Community Mennonite Church near Hagerstown for more than 40 years. Lewis was a local businessman for many years, owning L. M. Coss Fruit Market and Lewis Coss Furniture & Appliances.

He was a member of the Mennonite Economic Development Association and a philanthropist in later years, establishing a scholarship foundation at Eastern Mennonite Seminary.

He was a member of the Mennonite Historical Association of the Cumberland Valley, and had an interest in genealogy and the church at large.


He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Louise (Martin) Coss; daughters, Cheryl M. (Coss) Lehman and husband, Nelson, of Mount Joy, Pa., Twila J. (Coss) Eberly and husband, Darrell, of Lancaster, Pa.; son, Dwayne R. Coss and wife, Christa, of Hagerstown; granddaughters, Krista Lehman of Tucson, Ariz., and Katelyn Hunsberger of Strasburg, Pa.; and grandsons, Dallas Eberly of Harrisburg, Pa., and Jordan Coss, Ryan Coss and Derek Coss, all of Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by infant son, Dwight J. Coss.

Services will be held Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Mount Zion Mennonite Church, Benevola Church Road Boonsboro, Md., with pastors Roger Martin and Paul Clemmer officiating.

Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, on Monday, March 26, 2012, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Interment will be at the Mount Zion Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Menno Haven or Community Mennonite Church.
