Boonsboro had its most successful indoor track and field season in program history this year.

The girls won team titles at both the Washington County and Maryland Class 1A state championships, each for the first time ever, while the boys team had its best finish ever at states, tying for second place.

Boonsboro’s Becky Walter is The Herald-Mail’s 2011-12 Washington County Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year.

“I think I was almost as excited with the boys’ second-place finish at states as I was with the girls’ win,” Walter said. “I never would have thought we’d have a chance to place that high after last year (losing several key boys to graduation). But we had some new people come out and some returners step up and fill those gaps.”

Boonsboro’s girls dominated, competing with nearly all of the same athletes who led them to the outdoor state title last year.

Indoors this year, they won the county title by 52.5 points, the West region title by 75 points and state title by 29 points.

“With the girls, I told them from Day 1 that we had a target on our backs,” Walter said. “We won outdoors last year and teams were out to get us. If we wanted to remain on top, we had to work for it, and they certainly did. They came to practice every day and handled everything that was thrown at them.”

At the state meet, her girls scored points in all 13 events. Walter extends much of the credit for that achievement to her assistants — Shawn Cutsail, Sue Lowery, Sarah Harris, Dan Sullivan and Aaron Kelly.

“To score in every event in the state took each and every one of them,” Walter said. “Without each of them, we wouldn’t have had the balance that we had.”

The Warriors now are focused on more titles this spring.

“What can you say?” Walter said. “We like to win.”
