Sarah Zielinski went the distance for Boonsboro over the winter — race by race, lap by lap.

When she finally finished, she had a pair of Maryland Class 1A state gold medals to go along with a silver — and a state team title to celebrate with her fellow Warriors.

Zielinski, a junior, is The Herald-Mail’s 2011-12 Washington County Girls Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

“I wasn’t quite expecting to have such an important role,” said Zielinski of the state meet. “I was only supposed to run the mile (1,600) and 2-mile (3,200), but they ended up putting me in the 4x800 too. And it turned out really well.”

After contributing to the winning and school-record-setting 4x800 relay (10:17.25) to begin the meet, Zielinski came out on the short end of a dogfight with Perryville’s Jordan Dodson in the 1,600, finishing second by a fraction of a second in 5:21.36, another school record.

Zielinski then returned to the track for the 3,200 and blew everyone away, winning by 20 seconds in 11:37.68, yet another school record.

“It was a lot for one day,” she said.

But it was more than worth the effort, as she helped lead the Warriors to their first-ever indoor state team title.

“It was awesome,” Zielinski said. “Coming in, I really wasn’t expecting us to win, but we pulled it out.”

And even though she didn’t defend both of her individual state titles from the previous year in the 1,600 and 3,200, she had never raced any harder.

“The state meet is the most focused and determined that I’ve ever seen her. She did not let anything bother her,” Boonsboro coach Becky Walter said. “Her mile race at the state meet was the most impressive. She might have won the 2-mile, but she showed a lot of guts in the mile.

“She’s learning how to race. Before, she just ran, but now she races. She’s using more strategy now and things are starting to come together for her.”

Zielinski is now raring to go for the outdoor spring season.

“I just want to run the same events and do even better,” she said.
