Smithsburg Middle School student loses part of two fingers

SMITHSBURG — A 13-year-old boy suffered a partial amputation of two fingers while using a saw at Smithsburg Middle School Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

James Ulrich, acting chief of Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services Inc., said he believes the boy was involved in an extracurricular activity at the school when the accident occurred.

The boy was flown to the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore, where doctors were going to try help him regain full use of his hand, Ulrich said.

The boy was flown from Smithsburg Community Volunteer Co. after officials received the call at 4:32 p.m., a 911 spokesman said.
