Martinsburg men charged in theft of scrap metal

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Two Martinsburg residents were charged Monday with stealing 400 pounds of scrap metal, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said.

Robert Cleveland, 32, and Steven Miller, 25, were charged with one count each of petit larceny, conspiracy to commit petit larceny and receiving/transporting stolen property, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

Deputies said they were called at 2:59 p.m. Monday to the intersection of Hanshew Lane and Berkeley Station Road for a report of several men taking scrap metal and loading it into a Ford Explorer.


A short time later, deputies found Cleveland and Miller inside the vehicle with 400 pounds of scrap metal, including 100 pounds that belonged to the Winchester & Western Railroad Co., according to allegations in the release.

The sheriff’s office said a railroad employee recovered the railroad’s property.

Arrest warrant issued in Pa. assault case

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. — An arrest warrant has been issued for a Harrisonville, Pa., man who police allege struck a woman Sunday on Camp Ridge Road in Licking Creek Township, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Lance Joshua Mellott, 26, of 1205 Camp Ridge Road, was charged in the warrant with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment, according to a state police news release.

Troopers allege the incident happened while Mellott and the woman were traveling to his residence early Sunday morning. The woman was struck on the face and head with closed fists, police said.

Gas stolen from tractor

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police said they were looking for the person who stole about 10 gallons of gasoline from a tractor earlier this week in Bethel Township.

The incident occurred Sunday or Monday near the intersection of Pigeon Cove and Quarry Hill roads, according to a state police news release.

The owner of the tractor told troopers that the gas was valued at about $37.50.

Camper fire spreads to shed in Montgomery Township

MONTGOMERY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A camper fire spread to a shed early Tuesday in Montgomery Township, said Fire Chief Donald “Dusty” Stoner of the MMPW Volunteer Fire Co.

Stoner said the fire was reported at 1:39 a.m. in the 11300 block of Anne Lane. The fire started at the camper and jumped to a nearby shed, he said.

Firefighters spent about 80 minutes at the scene, Stoner said.

He said the fire would be investigated by the fire marshal’s office.

The following incidents were reported by Franklin County (Pa.) Emergency Services:


  • At 8:44 p.m., a residential fire alarm was reported in the 100 block of Lincoln Way West in Chambersburg.


  • At 12:58 a.m., an inside investigation in the first block of West Washington Street in Chambersburg.
  • At 1:19 a.m., a traffic accident was reported in the 200 block of Sollenberger Road in Hamilton Township.
  • At 1:39 a.m., a house fire was reported in the 11300 block of Anne Lane in Montgomery Township.
