Businesses fined for underage alcohol sales

Washington County liquor officials have fined five businesses for selling alcohol to an underage police agent earlier this year.

Sgt. Robert Whittington of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office told the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County during compliance hearings Wednesday that the checks were made Jan. 17 and 28.

Liquor board officials said the fines varied, in part, based on the number of previous violations.

The businesses and the amounts of their fines included:
• Potomac Discount Liquors, 187 E. Main St. in Hancock, $750.
• Town Tavern, 15 Main St. in Hancock, $100.
• Old Orchard Liquors, 17619 Virginia Ave. in Halfway, $100.
• Battleview Market, 5331 Sharpsburg Pike in Sharpsburg, $1,500 ($1,000 will be suspended if the owner purchases an electronic identification-card reader within 30 days).
• Halfway Liquors, 17438 Virginia Ave. in Halfway, $500.

Whittington said the following businesses passed compliance checks:

• Valley Wine and Spirits, 17301 Valley Mall Road in Halfway.
• Oak Ridge Discount Liquors, 18208 Oak Ridge Drive in Halfway.
• T.J’s Discount Liquors, 11 E. Oak Ridge Drive.
• C&R Liquors, 1304 Dual Highway.
• Rosewood Liquors, 11205 John F. Kennedy Drive.
• Antietam Spirits, 706 Chase Six Blvd. in Boonsboro.
• Boonsboro Liquors, 10 S. Main St. in Boonsboro.
• McNamee’s Tavern, 18154 Lappans Road in Fairplay.
• Castle’s Liquors, 12 Milestone Terrace in Williamsport.
