6th District candidates get endorsements

As the 6th Congressional District race nears the April 3 primary elections, candidates are announcing new endorsements.

On Tuesday, Maryland Comptroller Peter V.R. Franchot endorsed fellow Democrat John Delaney.

A statement released by Delaney’s campaign quoted Franchot saying Delaney has “first-hand experience creating jobs and helping small businesses grow.”

During an interview with The Herald-Mail about three months ago, Franchot, without mentioning names, hinted that he might not support state Sen.Robert J. Garagiola. Franchot stated his opposition to certain tax increases Garagiola has supported.

Garagiola announced on Wednesday that he has won the endorsement of the United Auto Workers.

Other groups recently endorsing Garagiola include the Sierra Club and the AFL-CIO. He previous received the backing of Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown, several state lawmakers and other unions.

Earlier this month, Delaney received former President Bill Clinton’s endorsement.

Dr. Milad L. Pooran, another Democrat in the race, has been endorsed by Howard Dean, former Vermont governor and Democratic National Committee chairman, as well as U.S. Reps. Keith Ellison of Minnesota and Raúl M. Grijalva of Arizona.

Seven of the eight Washington County delegation members are publicly supporting candidates in the race.
Sen.Ronald N. Young and Del. John P. Donoghue back Garagiola.

Del. Michael J. Hough and Del. Neil C. Parrott are behind the incumbent, U.S. Rep.Roscoe G. Bartlett.

Hough and Parrott initially supported former state Sen. Alex X. Mooney until he ended his campaign.

Sens. Christopher B. Shank and George C. Edwardsand Del. LeRoy E. Myers Jr. are backing state Sen. David R. Brinkley, R-Carroll/Frederick.

Del. Andrew A. Serafini has not endorsed anyone.
