HAGERSTOWN — St. Maria Goretti opened up its season with an 11-run first inning en route to a 22-2 smothering of Spencerville on Tuesday in a shortened five-inning game.

The first 11 Goretti batters scored before Spencerville recorded an out. And after a 30-minute first inning, the game had been all but decided.

“The team was excited to get (the season) started,” Goretti coach Duane Myers said. “We have a lot of talent on this team and this is what I expect.”

Ryan Kinter was instrumental in the Gaels’ victory as the starting pitcher and leadoff hitter.

Kinter went 2-for-4 — with a double and triple — and drove in four runs. He protected the lead by working four innings, allowing only one hit and five walks, while striking out 11.

“(Kinter) is our No. 2 starter and I expect a lot out of him,” Myers stated. “I’m very pleased with his effort today.”

Kinter scored the game’s first run by drawing a leadoff walk, stealing second and third base before crossing the plate on a balk.

Goretti (1-0) piled up nine hits in the first inning, including five for extra bases. Surprisingly, none of the hits were home runs during the Gaels’ offensive clinic.

The hole only got deeper for Spencerville.

Goretti added two runs in the second, four runs in the third and posted five runs in the fourth inning.

“They were feeding off each other today,” Myers said. “This is what we hope to do: Score a lot of runs and have our defense hold the other teams.”

Spencerville faced a 22-0 deficit heading into the fifth inning until Jason Boyd ripped a two-run double to avert the shutout.
