'Annie Get Your Gun' at Smithsburg High

Smithsburg High School will present Irving Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun” Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. and  Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. 

Tickets cost $8. 

Dinner and the show is available Friday. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $12. 

The spaghetti dinner and the show will benefit the sophomore class.

Money bonanza

Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co., 22 N. Main St., Smithsburg, will hold a money bonanza Saturday at the Smithsburg Fire Hall. 


Doors will open at  5 p.m. and the meal will be served at 6 p.m. A dance with DJ will follow.

Tickets cost 30 per couple  No one under 18 will be admitted and participants must be 21 to drink. 

The menu includes pit beef, baked beans, Barb’s chili, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese,  dessert and drinks.

Food drive extended through end of March

Allegany Dental Care has extended its food drive through the end of March.

It will be accepting donations of nonperishable food items at its three locations. All food collected will be donated to Food Resources Inc.

The locations are 19418 Leitersburg Pike (across from the new post office and Lyles Center);  22109 Jefferson Blvd. (near Smithsburg); and 17719 Virginia Ave. (near the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Halfway Boulevard). 

The offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m..

Seminar on Civil War planned March 31 at HCC

A Civil War seminar will be held Saturday, March 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  at Hagerstown Community College.

The seminar will feature four one-hour lectures, lunch, and a panel discussion.

Seminar presenters include Tom Clemens, professor of history at HCC, who will present “Antietam Like You’ve Never Heard It;” Dennis Frye, chief historian, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, who will present “September Suspense: The Union Uncertain;” Stephen Recker, producer of “Virtual Gettysburg,” “Virtual Antietam” and member/founder of Antietam Battlefield Guides, who will present “Rare Image of Antietam;” and Daniel Toomey, historian and author who will present “The War Came by Train,” moderated by John Frye. 

The seminar will be held at the Merle S. Elliott Continuing Education and Conference Center on the HCC campus.

The seminar costs $61 and $56 for senior citizens, which includes materials, lunch and registration fees.
