John Philip (Phil) Myerly, 79, of Hagerstown, died Friday, March 9, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center.

Born Feb. 8, 1933, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John T. and Evelyn Jennings Myerly.

He is survived by his wife of 4 years, Judith (Judy) Myerly; two sisters, Mary Kammerle of Hagerstown and Helen Ann Spessard of Forest, Va.; one brother, Richard Myerly and wife, Mary, of Hagerstown; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert S. Myerly.

Phil began his career at an early age, working with his father, John T. Myerly, in his printing and downtown retail store business. During that time, he earned the rank of sergeant while serving in the Maryland National Guard. He was employed as office manager of Dixie Millwork in Hagerstown, and then worked as a cartographer in the Baltimore and Frederick areas. Phil retired after 20 years with the National Park Service, Division of Wayside Exhibits, at the Harpers Ferry Design Center in West Virginia.

Phil was instrumental in helping to form the Washington County Arts Council, and was one of the early chairmen of the Park Arts Festivals.

A craftsman of note, he began designing and building simple structures in his preteens. This carried him into the field of woodworking, pottery and clocks.

Phil’s love of travel took him and his wife over much of the world, including several lengthy stays in Mexico.

Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing or visitation.
