HAGERSTOWN — A 6-month-old boy apparently drowned when he was left unattended in a bathtub Wednesday night at a home in the east side of Hagerstown, city police said.

Hagerstown police Lt. Tom Langston said the incident was reported at 10:43 p.m. on Eastridge Drive.

Langston said the mother told police that she put the child in the bathtub and briefly walked away.

“When she came back, the child was unresponsive,” Langston said.

The infant was pronounced dead after being taken to Meritus Medical Center, according to Langston, who said the mother called 911.

Police Chief Arthur Smith said detectives were called to the home.

“There was no sign of neglect or abuse that we saw,” Smith said. “There’s nothing in there that raised our suspicions.”

Police said an autopsy likely would be performed, and the case will be routinely reviewed by the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office before further action is taken.

Washington County Child Protective Services has also initiated a parallel investigation into the case, according to police.
