Liquor Board to post stores in compliance on website

March 08, 2012

The Washington County liquor board will begin posting on its website the names of liquor stores that pass compliance checks for underage drinking.

During a hearing in Hagerstown Wednesday, the Board of License Commissioners agreed to start posting the names following a request by April Rouzer, a Washington County Health Department official who directs the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws program.

Rouzer said posting the names would be a way to recognize liquor stores that comply with the law. She said the health department already issues certificates and letters of appreciation to establishments that pass the test.

“On both (the certificate and the letter) it details when the check was given and when it was passed,” she said.
The health department received a $21,000 grant from the federal underage drinking program to fund compliance checks by the Hagerstown Police Department and Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Rouzer said.

The grant covers fiscal 2012, which started July 1 and will end June 30.

Compliance checks send underage agents into liquor stores to see if clerks sell alcohol to people who are younger than the legal drinking age.
