Ira Foster “Joe” Bowers, 90, of Hagerstown, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at his home.

Born Jan. 30, 1922, in Fairfield, Pa., he was the son of the late Foster Russell and Mary Pearl (Hockensmith) Bowers.

He was a U.S. Armyveteran of World War II.

Ira retired in 1984 after 15 years of service as a carpenter for Washington County Hospital. He also had worked for Callas Contractors, Western Maryland Railroad and Maugansville Lumber Co., and operated a lawn mower service shop on Weaver Avenue.

He is survived by his loving wife, Clara Mae (Whittington) Secrest Bowers; three sons, Steven L. Secrest of Columbia, Md., Kevin M. Secrest and wife, Nancy, of Hagerstown, and Curtis J. Secrest and wife, Trudy, of Fleming Island, Fla.; a sister, Mary Matthew of Hagerstown; a brother, Paul R. Bowers of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Bradley, Chad, Lindsey, Corey, Kiley and Kelsey Secrest; one great-grandson, Jaxon Secrest; two nieces, Peggy Dawson and Bessie Decker; and four nephews, Jeff and Brian Bowers, and Thomas and Rodney Rice.


In addition to his parents, Ira was preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys (Lowery) Bowers; a sister, Florence Bowers Duffy; and a niece, Beth Bowers.

A funeral service will be Friday, March 9, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Steve Wagoner officiating. Interment will follow in Salem Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
