WES student qualifies for state geography bee

Brett Guessford, a fifth-grader at Williamsport Elementary School, qualified to represent his school and participate in the state level of the National Geographic Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

The state bee will be held Friday, March 30, at the Catonsville Campus of the Community College of Baltimore County.

Congratulations, Brett, and best wishes for success in the state bee.

Earth Hour combines entertainment and information

What do the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, Taj Mahal and Byron Memorial Park have in common? They will all shut their lights off for one hour on Saturday, March 31, along with many other monuments around the world.

Williamsport is getting “Dark in the Park” in observance of this global initiative to call attention to our carbon footprint.

The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. in Byron Memorial Park and features live music, refreshments, door prizes, drum circles and environment-friendly sponsors.

Eco-friendly organizations and businesses interested in showcasing their programs can call 301-302-3878 to sign up for a space at no charge.

Clothes of Hope schedule for March

Clothes of Hope Ministries at Williamsport United Methodist Church, 25 E. Church St., provides gently used and some new clothing. It will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. on  Thursday. It will be open from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 12, and Thursdays, March 15 and 22.

There is no charge for clothing. Monetary donations are accepted.

The Clothes of Hope will not be accepting any clothes donations until April 30.
