March 06, 2012

CLEAR BROOK, Va. — An Inwood, W.Va., man died early Tuesday after crashing head-on into a tractor-trailer while traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 81 in Frederick County, Va., Virginia State Police said.

Cory Michael McBrearty, 22, died at the scene of the crash, which happened about 3:50 a.m. about a half-mile south of the Clear Brook exit for I-81, Sgt. Frederick L. Tyler said.

McBrearty, who was driving a 2004 Chevorlet Cobalt, was not wearing a seat belt, Tyler said.

The crash in the left, northbound lane prompted police to reduce traffic to one lane until about 7:10 a.m., Tyler said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Richard L. Cooke Jr., 49, of Richmond, Va., was taken to Winchester, Va., for treatment, Tyler said. Cooke was wearing a seat belt, Tyler said.
