Jimmy John's coming to Hagerstown

Hagerstown residents who love Jimmy John’s sandwiches will have a shorter drive to get their next Big John, Totally Tuna or Turkey Tom sub in the near future.

The City of Hagerstown issued a zoning certificate last week for a new Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches restaurant at 1723 Dual Highway. The location is next to the Martin’s grocery store in Hagerstown Commons.

The 1,600-square-feet shop will offer the restaurant’s customary array of subs, sandwiches and sides for dining in, takeout and delivery, franchise owner Brian Campbell said Monday.

Building permits should be approved by the end of this week and construction could start in about two weeks, with the store’s potential opening in about eight weeks, Campbell said.

Campbell, who has worked in the Hagerstown area for the past seven years, said he fell in love with Jimmy John’s sandwiches after visiting one in Las Vegas. After taking his kids to Jimmy John’s in Frederick, Md., Campbell decided he wanted to open one closer to Hagerstown.

Campbell said he would be looking to hire about 20 employees, including delivery drivers and in-store personnel, starting in about two weeks.

First established in Charleston, Ill., in 1983, Jimmy John’s has grown to 1,200 stores nationwide, according to the company’s website.
