Special Olympics Maryland Winter Games at Whitetail Resort have been canceled

February 27, 2012

The 2012 Special Olympics Maryland Winter Games scheduled to be held at Whitetail Resort in Mercersburg, Pa., on Monday have been canceled, Special Olympics Maryland announced Monday morning.

Approximately 225 athletes from Maryland were scheduled to participate.

"This is a decision that was very difficult to make," the announcement read. "The current weather conditions, slope conditions and forecast have contributed to the final conclusion. At all times the safety of the athletes must be paramount. Conditions as they stand now do not provide a comfortable level of safety."

In addition to the action and excitement of the sports competitions, the winter games serve as an opportunity for athletes to qualify for the 2013 World Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Special Olympics Maryland has been allotted two openings for state athletes to be part of Team USA when the team travels to South Korea next January.

Because of the cancellation, athletes chosen for the two slots will be detemined by using the results from the 2011 Special Olympics Maryland Winter Games.

The slots Maryland received were:

  • 1 Male Intermediate Alpine Skiing
  • 1 Female Level 2 (100 M and above) Snowshoe.
