Mr. Roy Swope Jr., 76, of 12450 Pen Mar Road, Waynesboro, died unexpectedly at 10.15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, in the emergency room of Waynesboro Hospital.

Born July 16, 1935, in Rouzerville, Pa., he was the son of the late Roy Swope Sr. and Mary C. (Tracy) Swope. He lived most of his life in the Rouzerville area and attended Rouzerville schools. 

He and his wife, the late Pauline R. (Lewis) Swope, were married April 19, 1958, in Smithsburg, Md.  They moved to the Pen Mar Road address in 1964. Mrs. Swope died Feb. 14, 2003. 

Mr. Swope worked as a machinist at Mack Trucks, retiring after more than 30 years of service to the company. Following his retirement, he did general maintenance for D.L. Martin Co. in Mercersburg, Pa., for five years.   

He enjoyed gardening, hunting, traveling, camping and reading the newspaper. 

He is survived by four children, Patti L. Lewis of Baltimore, Md., Paul N. Swope and his wife, Sylvia, of Thurmont, Md., Gary L. Swope and his wife, Julie, of Thurmont, and Brian A. Swope and his wife, Alexis Palios, of Frederick, Md.; three grandchildren, Tara George, Benjamin Swope and Samuel Swope; one brother, Mitchell Swope of Hagerstown, Md.; his special friend, Nina Staley of Ringgold, Md.; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by 19 brothers and sisters. 

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Pastor Ben Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville. 

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 384 Floral Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
