The Maugansville Ruritan Club has announced this year’s essay winners.
The topic was “How Have the Events of 9/11/2001 changed America?”
The winners are:
First place, Elyssa Lou; second place, Luke Coulter; and third place Geraldine Betancur.
All students who participated are fifth-grade students at Maugansville Elementary School.
Approximately 95 students submitted essays.
Teachers monitored, collected and submitted the essays to the Ruritan members before the winter break.
The Ruritan essay committee then evaluated and selected the winners.
School Principal Archie van Norden, teachers Kyle Dingle, Karen Deneen, Jessica Wooster and Stephanie Crunkleton, essay winners and their families were invited to the Feb. 15 monthly dinner meeting.
After the introduction of guests, each essay winner read his or her essay and received their awards of U.S. Savings Bonds.
First-place winner received $100, second- place winner received $75 and third-place winner received $50.
This was the 21st year the Ruritan has sponsored a fifth-grade essay contest.
Ruritan scholarships available for students
The Maugansville Ruritan Club will sponsor four $1,000 scholarships for college-bound senior high school students.
Application forms for the scholarships are now available for all senior high school students who reside in the Maugansville/North Hagerstown High School boundaries extending west to Conococheague Creek.
Students who attend both private and public schools are eligible to apply.
Check with school counselors to obtain the applications and to check for eligibility criteria.
All completed scholarship applications must be returned to the Maugansville Ruritan Club members by Saturday, March 31.
All you-can-eat pancake breakfast is Saturday
The community is invited to the Maugansville Ruritan Club’s all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Saturday from 6:30 to 11 a.m.
The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy, juice, coffee and tea. Tickets cost $5.50 for adults, $3 for those ages 6 to 12 and are free for those ages 5 and younger.
The breakfast will be cooked and served at the Ruritan Club’s blue building on Maugans Avenue. All proceeds will benefit the Maugansville community.
It’s time to register for Little League
Maugansville Little League will hold registration for new and returning players Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Little League press box.
