WAYNESBORO, Pa. — The Waynesboro Area School District music department will host its annual Music in Our Schools Month concert on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. at Waynesboro Area Senior High School’s Performing Arts Center.

This year’s concert will feature choral students from Fairview, Hooverville, Mowery and Summitview elementary schools, along with students from Waynesboro Area middle and high schools.

More than 700 students will participate in the event.

There also will be a sneak preview of the high school’s all-school production of “Fiddler on the Roof.”
The concert is free and open to the public.

Music In Our Schools Month began as a single statewide celebration in 1973. It has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and in 1985, a monthlong celebration of music, according to a news release from the Waynesboro music department.

March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education for the observance of Music in Our Schools Month, the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The 2012 theme is “Music Lasts a Lifetime.”

Schools and communities throughout the country and overseas celebrate Music in Our Schools Month with concerts and other activities based on the year’s theme, the release said.
