Volunteer Washington County announces winners of poetry contest

In honor of the Rev.Martin Luther King Jr., Volunteer Washington County partnered with the Washington County Arts Council and Washington County Public Schools to host a poetry contest during the inaugural MLK Day of Service.

The theme of the contest was “Celebrating Dr. King’s Legacy.”

A panel of judges representing numerous institutions including the school system, arts council, Washington County Free Library, Hagerstown Community College, Volunteer Washington County, United Way and Contemporary School for the Arts and Gallery Inc., reviewed the poetry submissions.

The winners of the poetry contest were:

  • First place — Zora Chalkey, Boonsboro High School, 12th grade
  • Second place — Attiya Latif, Smithsburg High School, 10th grade
  • Third place — Claudia Jenkins, Boonsboro High School, 10th grade

The winning poems will be on display at the arts council through March 15.

The arts council is at 14 W. Washington St. in Hagerstown.

A reception, in honor of the winning authors, will be held at the arts council today from 7 to 8 p.m.


Prizes will be awarded and light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
